It’s Monday! That lovely day when we’re asked the question, What are You Reading? To see what others are reading, stop by Teach Mentor Texts where other bloggers have linked to their posts to share what they’ve been reading.
As for me… this was my first week home after school ended. I was actually at home too, which made it a great reading week. Since I’ve been reading Reading in the Wild by Donalyn Miller for #vaslchat’s Professional Summer Read I’ve been trying to practice more reading ‘at the edges.’ It’s something I’ve always done, but in the day of smart phones, I admit I’m out of practice. I’ve become an email checker while in line at the grocery store, rather than a reader.
Lately I’ve become more serious about reading ebooks. I have filled up my Overdrive list of holds with ten choices. I’m realizing that was probably a mistake as several of them have become available this week. I’m not sure I can keep up! When City of Heavenly Fire came available this week I ignored all the others for a day and I was a dedicated binge reader!
Here’s the rest of my week, which includes the first days of a real vacation with my mom. She is a reader as well so I’m hoping to knock out all of these, and probably a few others as well.
Quiet is one that was recommended by a friend of mine who is not an educator, but works in business. I would highly recommend that it is added to your reading list. It is full of wonderful reminders that we are all complex people but the message that has stuck with me through the first few chapters is that being an extrovert does not mean you are a leader. And being an introvert doesn’t mean that you are not a leader, or lack intellect in any way.
I realize I’m probably the last librarian on earth to read the recent Newbery medal book. I love Kate DiCamillo’s work and the fact that each of her books is unique and doesn’t fit into the same mold as the one she wrote before. But I’ve been slow to get to my copy of Flora & Ulysses. I’ve been taking it everywhere with me over the weekend and hope to finish it today.
