I’ve never taught Kinders on the first day of school before. Or even first period of the day. This week I had both. Kinders were at my door 45 minutes after the morning announcements. They walked in the door and kept coming and coming and coming. It seemed like a never ending line.
Two were crying.
One looked like he had finished crying.
One looked like he was about to cry.
I greeted and hugged and reassured and we got all 27 kids seated on the carpet.
I shared about how I had new red shoes just like a character in the story. I invited students to share about their new shoes too, and there were plenty of excited voices sharing.
It was in general a great time. Pete the Cat: Rocking in my School Shoes was a great book to read on the first day of school. I think my principal walked through twice while I was singing the refrain. Kids were joining in and it was lovely. I think what I like best about the younger students during the first class is they interject and aren’t afraid to talk. My fourth graders hardly made a peep during their class. Kinders are just so refreshing!
So the schedule is working great. We made some modifications to it last week. I was originally going to teach every class for one week and then have two weeks with no classes. Instead, the counselor, instructional technologist and I each have 2 classes a day. We each have a five day rotation of 2 grades each: morning, midday, or afternoon. I think it’s going to work beautifully and I’m very happy.
Just like Pete, I’m rocking in my red shoes!
